Read Luke 15:11-24
Remember that this parable is the third one in a trio. We've looked at the first two, this one will be similar. Again, this is most often taught that this is referring to empty vs. filled. But I believe it is talking about “little ones” who are dealing with obedience versus disobedience. You may be familiar with the story, but I'd like for you to dig a little deeper.
First, we'll set the list of characters:
The Father represents who?
The inheritance represents what?
Some followers take the portion of their inheritance and run. In other words, they invite Jesus into their lives, but then they choose not to obey His instructions and live their lives far away from God.
Based on this parable, what should they expect while they are “away” from God?
Read Jeremiah 2:13
A cistern is a tank for storing water. This verse summarizes the life of a follower of Jesus who is not walking in obedience to God. They reject the wonderful life God has planned for them. And very often, everything they touch crumbles or leaks!
How does the Father respond when the son returns?
This is how God feels about us when we realize we've been going our own way and doing our own thing. He asks us to do a U-turn and is thrilled when we do! There's no way we can “fix” all the messes we've made, but God doesn't ask us to. He simply asks that we “turn” or “repent” and He'll do the rest!
