Dear Explorer,
Read John 1:1-3
When you write a biography of a person, you generally state where they began – you might start with parents, or grandparents or even great grandparents, but you trace their beginnings.
When did John say that Jesus began?
He didn't! Jesus has always been. He is eternal.
Read Genesis 1:1
What are the first 4 words of the Bible (Genesis 1:1)?
If you just looked at those 4 words you would have a definition of eternity. “In the beginning, God.” Before anything else, God was.
Now John is teaching us that God was not technically alone. While He is One God, He is also 3 persons – the Father; the Son, Jesus; and the Holy Spirit. John states that Jesus was not only present at Creation, He was an active participant.
Read Genesis 1:26
These words indicate plurality.
Re-read John 1:1-3
What does John call Jesus in these first few verses of his book?
Do you know what “the Word” or “logos” meant in Greek?
The Greek philosophers used the word “logos” to mean reason or logic. They believed that “logos” held the universe together. (He does!) When John used it to describe Jesus, he got everybody's attention – the Jews and the Greeks.
In John 1:2-3, John clarified that he wasn't talking about an abstract philosophy – he was talking about a person.
Read John 1:4-5
Jesus as Creator is the giver of life. He is called the Light of the World. But the world is dark and does not understand Him.
John, the author of this book, physically walked and talked with Jesus for about 3 years. He wants you to know that Jesus was no ordinary man. He was a supernatural being who came to earth. He was God in the flesh. And that's how this record of Jesus' life begins.
In His service, dale
