Dear Explorer,
Read Matthew 6:14-15
I think that's an important truth to know! Forgiving others is not optional if you want God to forgive you!
Read Matthew 6:16-18
We talked about fasting on Day 62 if you need to review that discussion.
What does Jesus emphasize in this passage?
How well Jesus knows humans! How tempting it is to try to get sympathy from others if we are fasting. Also note the implication that we will practice fasting.
And what does He say happens if you are fasting to be seen by others?
We lose our reward. So apparently there is a reward for those who fast.
Read Matthew 6:19-21
What things can happen to treasures stored up on earth that doesn't happen to treasures stored in Heaven?
Can you explain what Jesus is talking about? What are earthly treasures as opposed to heavenly or spiritual treasures?
I believe that earthly treasures are the things that this world values – like jewels or crowns or money or houses or fame or fortune, etc. I believe that heavenly treasures include our obedience to God's will for our lives. I think when we please God with our obedience and our behavior or attitude then He adds to our treasure. Maybe this also includes rewards for fasting and praying and telling others about Jesus. Paul talks about a crown of righteousness that will be given to us. Those are treasures that are spiritual – but will be kept for us in Heaven. No one can steal them or ruin them. Yay!
Look carefully at Matthew 6:21. What is the important truth that Jesus is teaching here?
