Dear Explorer,
Read Luke 6:39-40
How would you say this in your own words? What do you think it means?
I believe Jesus is saying “watch out” for who you let teach you. As a child, that decision is left to your parents, but as you get older, more and more you will have to make the choice.
I remember a teacher that I had in High School. She went to my church and I taught her kids. But I did not respect her. I felt that she was not living as a follower of Jesus should and I had a hard time listening to her. I would not look her in the eye when she was teaching, and I was close to being disrespectful. I pulled an A in the class by hard work and studying extra hard and delivering every assignment, but I refused to pay attention to her teachings. Why? Because her life was a mess and I didn't want to learn from her!
I had another teacher, who I really respected and admired. I listened to his lectures and really wanted to know everything I could learn from him. One of the things he mentioned several times was having a “bucket list”. I had never heard the term – but because he had one – I thought it was really cool. I not only learned the subject matter, but a lot of other things about life that have really helped me.
Who do you listen to and learn from?
You may have to sit under teachers you don't respect, but you don't have to “learn” their lifestyles or their ways. Be careful who you follow. And this includes friendships as well. Be careful about admiring people who are not following Jesus.
You can choose who you let influence your life! But choose carefully!

What is Jesus saying here?
Don't try to help or point out someone else's problems until you first address your own problems which may be even greater.
In fact, psychologists will tell you that the things that bother you the most in other people are probably things that you see in your own life and don't like!
In His service, dale
