Read Luke 9:46-48
I wonder how long it was between the verses we read yesterday and the ones we are reading today? Jesus tells them that He will be dying soon, and they began arguing about who is the greatest.
But think about it – if they still believed that Jesus had come to set up an earthly Kingdom – wouldn't He need someone to be His right-hand-man? And if He's going to go away – someone would need to rule in His place.
But then Jesus took a little child…
In today's world children are cherished and spoiled and pampered. Not so in Jesus' time. They were not considered important at all.
So, what was Jesus saying?
Is it easier to welcome someone who is “somebody” special, or is it easier to welcome someone that is not considered cool or popular?
Jesus says that greatness is determined by how we treat others and how we think of ourselves.
It is a very special thing to be called a follower of Jesus. It is a very special thing to follow Him and be 100% committed to obedience. But we recognize that that greatness is 100% His – not ours. We are just His servants, obeying His orders. We give Him all the praise and glory and honor, and we keep our focus on Him.
